ItineraryDay 1: Colombo
On arrival, you’ll be welcomed by a Go Beyond representative and transfer to your Colombo hotel. Check-in at the hotel, refresh yourself with a welcome drink and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. Overnight stay in Colombo.
Day 2: Authentic train ride through the mountains from Colombo to Kandy.
After breakfast, check-out and depart to Fort Railway station by 07:00 am. Board the train for a ride to Kandy in Sri-Lanka’s “local” class train car. The train winds its way through small villages and stations, admire the village station masters waving their green and red flags and flowers all around. Up through the mountains you’ll venture, past waterfalls and towards the clouds. Upon arrival at Kandy’s station, you’ll be picked up by a friendly tuk-tuk driver and travel to a local homestay. Get comfortable in your new surroundings and gather in the evening for dinner. Overnight stay at local homestay.
Day 3: Kandy: Nature trek to a solitary waterfall and picnic.
You’ll walk through quaint villages on the way to a waterfall about 12 kilometers away. The walk is mostly uphill. If you do not want to hike to the waterfall, you can choose to ride by tuk-tuk (for an additional cost of approximately LKR 250). Although the villagers live modestly, they are very friendly and will gladly invite you into their homes and experience their way of life. During the last kilometer of your hike to the waterfall, you’ll travel through unexplored forest and when you arrive at the waterfall you’ll think you’ve walked onto the set of a classic King Kong movie! We expect no other tourists will share this experience with you, so swim at your ease and enjoy a picnic lunch by the water.
Travel back by tuk-tuk or jeep and enjoy some free to relax in the late afternoon. In the evening, you’ll participate in preparing a traditional meal, which you’ll enjoy later as your dinner! Overnight stay at local homestay.
Day 4: Visit to Kandy Farmers’ Co-operative:
Next to the community homestays is a large area where independent farmers struggle to cultivate their lands. They have formed a farmers’ co-operative, funded partly by us and partly by the groups who visit us. You too can participate by working side-by-side in the rice fields and vegetable plots with the local farmers!
There are other opportunities to interact with the locals which can be arranged on the spot if you are interested. For example, you can visit a nearby village school to volunteer for a few hours when school is in session.
Departure after breakfast to Kandy city by bus for the onward journey. Continue on your own.
