Severe Flooding Crisis in Hat Yai, Southern Thailand

Southern Thailand is facing the heaviest flooding in decades, with Hat Yai and surrounding districts in Songkhla Province among the most severely affected after several days of continuous, record-breaking rainfall.
Current Situation
- Hat Yai has been officially declared a disaster zone after receiving over 330 mm of rain in one day and 600 mm within three days.
- Rapid flooding overwhelmed drainage systems, submerging major roads and low-lying areas.
- Authorities have ordered evacuations for at-risk communities. Military and rescue teams are actively assisting residents stranded in flooded zones.
Impact on Tourists & Local Travel
- More than 400 tourists have been evacuated from flooded hotels in Hat Yai.
- Thousands of visitors especially Malaysian tourists have been affected as road and rail routes have become impassable.
- Regional commerce and tourism are heavily disrupted, with economic losses estimated at over 1 billion THB per day.
- Officials warn that conditions may worsen due to continued rainfall and runoff from upstream areas.

- Several crossings remain closed due to ongoing tensions, security concerns, and unresolved disputes over territory.
- Thailand has emphasized that conditions must be met before easing restrictions, particularly around safety and illegal activities such as online scam operations.
Tourism & Trade Impact:
- Many cross-border tour packages have been canceled.
- Hotel bookings near border provinces have dropped significantly.
- Authorities and business leaders report that both cross-border trade and tourist flows have fallen sharply, negatively impacting local economies.
- Widespread travel advisories recommend avoiding border provinces, though Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Siem Reap, and Phnom Penh remain safe and unaffected.
