ItineraryDay 1: Arrive in Khao Sok National Park. Bath and feed an elephant. Enjoy the peace and tranquillity
Khao Sok National Park is one of the oldest rainforests in the world and home to the man-made Cheow Lan Lake. It is conveniently located in Southern Thailand, between the two coasts, and in the morning you will transfer from either Surat Thani or Khao Lak to your Khao Sok community lodge*. It is on the edge of Khao Sok National Park, surrounded by breath taking lime stone cliffs, hovering high above the ancient forests. Take your time to settle in, enjoy the jungle surroundings and the charm of your community lodge.**
In the late afternoon go for a true and sustainable elephant experience. You will spend time preparing elephant food to feed an old elephant. You will have opportunity to bath it and in general spend time with the elephant and mahout (elephant care taker). By taking part in this low impact experience we support the elephants and contribute to their ethical upkeep.***
A traditional Thai dinner will be served in the lodge restaurant around 18:00 and the rest of the evening is free to relax and let the day’s experience sink in.
Accommodation: Anurak Community Lodge in double or twin room bungalows with own bathroom
Day 2: Full day at the Cheow Lan Lake, swim in the lake and explore the surroundings
Wake up to the sound of birds singing and gibbons calling from the treetops. Have breakfast in the early morning as the mist slowly lifts itself from the mountains. You will spend the coming day and night at Cheow Lan Lake – without a doubt one of the most strikingly beautiful places in Thailand! With over 100 little islets and towering limestone cliffs, a full day lake tour gives you not only the opportunity to marvel at the magnificent ‘fairy-tale’ like scenery, but also to spot wild life in their natural habitat.
Upon arrival at the Rajaprabha Dam you will board a long tail boat and head deep into a remote corner of the lake. Surrounding you is the giant limestone cliffs, green rainforest, and bold trees rising from the water surface.
Around noon, you will arrive at the raft house, and the rest of the day is all about relaxation in amazingly beautiful surroudings. Either go for a swim, borrow a kayak and explore the many paths and canals of Khao Sok Lake, or just relax and sunbathe while enjoying the beautiful nature.
You will experience spectacular views, incredible atmosphere and natural scenery in front of you, which many travellers compare to Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam. Be sure to be at the raft house as the sun sets over the lake, and enjoy a Thai dinner and the quietness of the lake while stars sparkle above you
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Thara Rafthouse in double or twin room bungalows with own bathroom and fan
Day 3: Do a misty morning safari to spot wildlife and spend the morning at the Cheow Lan Lake. Departure from Khao Sok National Park to your onwards destination
Rise before breakfast to board a long tail boat for a morning mist wildlife safari. From your boat you may see macaque monkeys, dusty languor, great hornbills, wild boars, gibbon monkeys, and if you are lucky, a wild elephant!
Back at the raft house, enjoy a traditional Thai breakfast and a bit of free time to swim and relax. Around noon you will check out from your raft house, have lunch and prepare to return to dry land. You will go by long tail boat back to the pier through the magical landscape. Once you reach the pier around 13:30, you will continue by minivan to your next destination.*
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
*Transportation from/to Surat Thani train station/airport or Khao Lak is included. Other destinations are possible for an extra fee. Please let us know your start/end location and desired pick-up/drop-off time upon booking.
**The Khao Sok Adventure is done in cooperation with local community operators, and their English may not always be perfect.
The tour lets you explore Thailand's oldest rainforest, and while the above is a general outline of the activities, the actual program is dependent on the local community, the weather/season and the group's general willingness and fitness level. As such, the tour itinerary may change without prior notice where the tours/sights may be substituted, and/or the sequence may be changed. We do not hold any liability in this regard, and we encourage you to meet the local life in the rainforest with an open mind. The experience will be extraordinary regardless.
***Go Beyond Asia does not offer tours with elephant riding. There is, and will still be a lot of elephant riding in Khao Sok, and we cannot guarantee that you will not see it. Thailand has a long history and tradition of using elephants as working elephants in the fields, forests, and latest in the tourism industry. To change the Thai perception of elephant care takes time. It is part of their culture. This also goes for the use of sticks and hatches, which are occasionally used for safety, or to direct the elephants, same way as a rider rides his horse.
If you want an experience free for any of the above, we recommend that you do so in North Thailand instead, where you can find well developed Happy Elephant Camps, and mahout training.
It is not possible to bring large suitcases to the raft house. In case you are travelling with a large suitcase, our local staff will store them and return them to you at the pier upon your departure from the raft house.
