Ubud attracts tourists from all over the world owing to its traditional handicrafts, picturesque rainforests, and terraced rice paddies along with Hindu temples and shrines. Being a home to such natural wonders and architectural marvels, explore the rich glories of Ubud’s past and present.
We will make a first stop at the Monkey Forest, more specifically at the village of Padang Tegal. he Ubud Monkey Forest is home to over 700 grey long-tailed macaques. Also known as the Sacred Monkey Forest of Padangtegal, this natural sanctuary has paved pathways through a leafy nutmeg forest as well as several ancient temples under dense foliage. It’s a popular wildlife reserve in Bali thanks to its community-based management, location and ease of access.
Next in today's program is a stop at Goa Gajah, a temple of Hindu and Buddhist heritage dating back from the 11th century. After taking the flight of stone steps down to the Goa Gajah temple complex, you often don't need more than an hour to explore and admire the relic-filled courtyard and view the rock-wall carvings. The site contains a namesake meditational cave, bathing pools and fountains.
We continue to Gunung Kawi, another temple dating back from the 11th century. The Gunung Kawi Temple complex comprises a collection of ancient shrines carved into the face of a rock cliff in central Bali. The main site overlooks the sacred Pakerisan River, which also flows by the Tirta Empul Temple a kilometre up north. Across the river from the ancient reliefs is a temple courtyard featuring old Hindu shrines in a more contemporary architectural style.
Our last stop of the day is at Tirta Empul Temple to see its compound consisting of a petirtaan or bathing structure, famous for its holy spring water, where Balinese Hindus go to for ritual purification.
