Day 3: Jaffna
Early this morning by 06:30 am meets your local host and transfer to the Jaffna jetty to catch the local ferry out to Delft Island.

Delft Island, situated in the Palk Strait, offers a unique and remote experience that contrasts sharply with the more commonly visited parts of Sri Lanka. This small, isolated island has only recently opened to tourism after being off-limits during the civil war. The island is home to a small Tamil population living in secluded compounds near the northern coast, where life is quiet and largely untouched by the outside world.

The island’s appeal lies not in its conventional tourist attractions, but in its rich history and the sense of isolation it offers. Historically, Delft was a strategic point of defense for both the Dutch and British during their colonial rule. The remnants of this history, along with the island’s natural features, provide a glimpse into a past that is both intriguing and largely forgotten.

Delft Island’s landscape is stark and barren, characterized by semi-arid tropical vegetation, including palmyrah palms and dry shrubs, growing on porous coralline soil. The beaches are unique, with a mix of coral chunks and sand, and the surrounding waters are shallow, contributing to the island’s isolated feel.

One of Delft’s most iconic features is its wild horses, descendants of those brought by the Dutch in the 17th century. These horses have adapted to the island’s harsh conditions, and while their numbers are dwindling, they remain a symbol of Delft’s rural and untamed nature.

To reach Delft, you’ll travel from Jaffna, crossing several low-lying causeways that vary in appearance depending on the season. After about an hour’s drive, you’ll board a ferry for a one-hour journey to the island. The ferry ride itself can be an adventure, with basic facilities and a reliance on weather conditions.

Upon arrival, an open-air jeep will take you on a tour of the island’s modest sights. These include the wild horses, a massive baobab tree believed to be Sri Lanka’s second largest, the ruins of a 1000-year-old Chola Dynasty temple, the remnants of a Dutch colonial fort, and coral walls that tell the story of the island’s past.

Delft Island offers a truly off-the-beaten-path experience, where the barren landscape and modest sights combine to create a sense of adventure and discovery, making it a destination unlike any other in Sri Lanka.

Enjoy your lunch at a local home at Delft Island, and later in the afternoon take the ferry ride back to mainland Jaffna.
