Travel Season: All year apart from the dates as mentioned above. In Myanmar the rainy season from the end of May until the end of September can bring heavy and regular rainfall. The best time to visit is from Nov - Feb when it is dry and temperatures are at their lowest around at around 20-25 degrees. At night times the temperatures can fall to lower than 10 Degrees in December and January whereas From Mar to May the temperature can rise to above 40 degrees!
Type of Transportation: Private minivan from Chiang Mai to Mae Sai, public shared taxi from Tachileik to Kengtung, car to take you around Kengtung outskirts, domestic flight between Kentung and Heho, and car for airport transfers.

Itinerary

Day 1: Chiang Mai – Mae Sai/Tachileik – Kengtung. Flow overland, cross the border and experience a remote corner of Burma’s Shan state.
Leave ECO Resort Chiang Mai early in the morning and watch the landscape change as you aim for the mountains in the North and the Mae Sai border. The drive is around 4-5 hours depending on traffic. On arrival in Mae Sai, you will cross the border around 10.30am and on the other side, in Tachileik, you will meet your guide. Go by shared taxi through gorgeous scenery, at a fine road to Kengtung. It’s about a 3 hours ride and upon arrival in Kengtung Town you will have the rest of the day to explore the small city.

Accommodation: Overnight at hotel in Kengtung Town

Day 2: Kengtung. Explore the outskirts of Kengtung and meet the local hill tribes.
Several hill tribes inhabit the mountains surrounding Kengtung Town; the Eng, Lahu, Lishaw and Akha tribes. Together with your guide and a pick-up truck you will visit 3 different hill tribe villages today. To take in the serene mountainous surroundings and to meet the local villagers at eyelevel.
Expect to be walking 30 min – 1 hour sometimes to reach the villages in case the unpaved road is in a bad condition. Return to Kengtung at the end of the day.

Day 3: Kengtung. Go to remote tribal villages while rewarded with serene mountain views and beautiful scenery.
Set out in a different direction to local tribal villages, where only few foreigners go. Expect to walk a bit more today and be rewarded by beautiful scenery and authentic hill tribe villages.
Return to Kengtung at the end of the day.

Day 4: Kengtung. Free day to explore the town and local life. The day is free for you to do as you please. Start early in the morning and visit the busy market. Walk the town roads and backstreets, pass the magical temples, see the British colonial architecture and embrace life in this remote corner of Myanmar.

Day 5: Kengtung – Nyaung Shwe, your gateway to Inle Lake
You have the morning free for breakfast and a bit of city exploration before you are transfered to Kengtung Airport. Fly to Heho Airport in the western part of the Shan State - your gateway to Inle Lake and the nearby town of Nyaung Shwe, where you will stay overnight for the next couple of days.
The afternoon and evening is free for you, to do as you please.

Day 6: Try your hands on a Shan Cooking Class at Bamboo Garden

Have breakfast at your hotel, but don’t eat too much. You will be treated with a fantastic cooking class in an open kitchen in a very atmospheric garden.
Walk 10 minutes to your meeting point (will be informed to you by Ms Sue one day in advance), and be ready at 09:00. Start by going to the Nyaung Shwe local market to buy the ingredients for your special menu. Bring it to the Bamboo Garden to learn Intha recipes of Intha style fish curry, fried vegetables, Shan noodles or fried rice cake and egg curry with tamarind paste. Around 12:00 noon you will have your own prepared lunch at the bamboo house, and take in the charming experienced you’ve just been part of.
The rest of the afternoon is free for you to do as you please – explore the city or organise a trip to nearby Inle Lake

Day 7: Check out and prepare for your onwards Myanmar explorations

Wake up for a slow morning, but remember to get up in time for breakfast. Check out before 12.00 noon and continue the adventure on your own.
