Ancient and Cultural Cities and Sigiriya
Small unpaved roads, with overhanging trees and early morning mist. A massive rock formation bathed in the last sunlight seen from everywhere around. Hornbills searching for fruit trees. Elephants leaving the national Parks and eating in the backyards of local homes. Its historical, but also lively.
Sigiriya Rock is visible from far away, and feeds curiosity. Come here in the early morning, or better yet, in the photogenic late afternoon and climb up in time to sit at the remains of the monastery on the top and see the sun set. An overhang on the rock face cave contains some fine fresco paintings. The front wall or face of the hill seems to be the imagination of the painter and they used it as a canvas to potray the heavenly maidens. The rock on opposite side has mirror finish. It is still questioned whether the ruins on the top is a monastery or remains of a 5th century fort.
For historical interested, the ruins at Pollonaruwa is absolutely worth a visit too. Pollonaruwa was the medival capital of Sri Lanka, known for some beautiful Buddhist images that still can be seen today. Not far from here is the national parks Kaudulla and Minneriya.
Dambulla Caves– Around 20 kilometers south east of Sigiryia, is a lively place with many monks, known for some of the best preserved rock carvings and paintings, in Sri Lanka.
From this area, it is not more than 2 hours into Kandy in the mountains, and 4 hours down to Colombo, or out to the eastern beaches.
