Are you in for a taste of colonial days with a whizz of China, Shanghai is the choice. Monkey lounge, Sichuan Margarita, Cloud 9, Bar rouge name them the hangouts. Afternoon tea at Huxin Tea House. Vibrant contemporary art at Mogashan art district. A stroll down The Bund. A dinner at the French concession.. A simple yet tasty soup dumpling at a steet stall for night owls.

You know you are in China, when you see them, Young couples being photographed right in the traffic, for their wedding, in flamboyant dresses and absolutely no discretion but truly cute. You know you are in Shanghai when you hit the Bund, and a constant flow of Porsches, Mercedes all in black, handled by drivers in white uniforms heads for the Banks. Shanghai is old and flashy new, it has more than 18 million people, yet in some quarters it can feel homy and small.

It is fast lane, yes, and the bars tends to be fast lane too, but in the old quartiers, you can flow on your bike in afternoon sun with no stress at all. Hang out at a tea house, or visit the hundreds of mothers in the central park looking for a wife for their single valuable son. Shanghai has a fine food scene, both Chinese and French and numerous others. You can high dine, very expensively, but manage on a acceptable budget from food stall, and quality takeaways.
