Day 2: Bangkok

Meet up with your guide at 08:30 in the lobby of Chamberlain Hostel. He will then accompany you to the nearby pier to board our long tail boat. From here you’ll move down the Chao Phraya the main river in Bangkok, with amazing backdrop views of the Bangkok skyline, before making a turn to enter the klongs. You will pass a range of local wooden stilt houses with clothes hanging to be dried in the sun, a local "7 eleven", klong style. Feel the atmosphere of having entered the klongs. You will hear Thai music being played from the houses, you will see birds looking at the trespassing boats, if you are lucky you will spot one of the sunbathing lizards.

The first stop is at the temple Wat Khun Chan where you will be inspired by the postmodern temples on one side of the klongs and the feeling of old days on the other with the beauty of the river crossing through the landscape. From there it’s onwards to the Artist Village, with old wooden walkways with artists, an old barber shop, an old grocery, vintage posters, colors of freedom, and a small stupa licking the sunlight. Feel the quietness surrounding this place. A stop will be made where you can feed holy Catfish. It’s a remarkable sight when hundreds of fish come to the surface seemingly out of nowhere!

Upon leaving the klongs you will see several houses on stilts and how locals live in small houses on the river. Then we leave the quietness and get back to noisy, Chao Phraya river and the majestic grand palace. Your trip ends at Pier 9 on the Chao Phraya River, from where you you can visit the nearby temples on your own, continue to the shopping malls or return to your accommodation.

Day 4: Siem Reap

Depart at 07:30 from your hotel by tuk-tuk to reach the Angkor compound just outside Siem Reap. The Angkor Archaeological Park is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking and one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia and the world. Stretching over 400 square km., including forested area, the park contains the magnificent remains of the capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. You could spend weeks exploring the ruins, but we’ll focus on the highlights.

Angkor Wat is one of mankind’s greatest achievements, and the intricate carvings at the temple of Angkor Wat demonstrate the skill of the Khmer builders. It was constructed in the jungle in the early 12th century, then - two centuries later - was mysteriously abandoned by the Khmer civilization. Now Angkor Wat is the main reason tourists visit Cambodia.

After Angkor Wat, we’ll head to the fabulous jungle temple of Ta Prohm. After Ta Prohm, you will visit the South Gate of Angkor Thom where you can choose to take a leisurely one kilometer walk along the wall and through the jungle to a hidden temple. We’ll then visit the temples of Bayon, Baphuon and the Terrace of Elephants and the Leper King.

To relax after a day of temple exploration, we’ll head to Tonle Sap Lake - the largest freshwater body in all Southeast Asia, to enjoy a sunset river cruise with local beer included! After a day of exploring, feel free to relax or head out for dinner.

We'll start at the Phsar Kandal morning market and bite into all of its delicacies and mouth-watering street-eats. We'll head to the old French Quarter, home to classic colonial architecture, and experience the contrast of gorgeously restored builds, and beautifully decaying abodes. We'll move further back in time and experience the Buddhist temple of Wat Phnom to understand the foundation on which Phnom Penh is built.
We'll then continue moving through the city and pass by Raffles Hotel, the old post building, the abandoned train station, and Cambodia’s largest market "Psah Thmei". You'll have the chance to discover the market’s best offerings, from antique coins, gold, and shoes to plastic goods, flowers, and food.

At the end of our city exploration, it is time to pay respect to the dark history of the Cambodian genocide. From 1976 to 1979, the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia with their own form of ultra-Marxism, resulting in the deaths of millions whose effects are still clearly felt today. Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21) was once a high school and was converted into a detention and torture center during the Khmer Rouge regime. Tuol Sleng remains today to remind us and educate us about this dark time in Cambodian history.

After a long morning, we'll return back to your guest house/hotel in Phnom Penh.
