Day 4: Ubud to Munduk

After breakfast, time to head to your next destination: Munduk. We will make some stops on the way to make the best of this loop journey.  After a short drive, we make our first stop at the world famous rice terrace of Jatiluwih on the slope of Mount Batukaru. Once a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site candidate, the Jatiluwih rice terraces comprise over 600 hectares of rice fields that follow the flowing topography of the Batukaru mountain range. These are maintained by a traditional water management cooperative known as subak, which dates back to the 9th century.

Next is Ulun Danu, a famous old Hindu lake temple on the scenic Lake Bratan in Bedugul, north Bali. The 12-story pagoda was built by the Balinese king of Mengwi in 1633, and the lake it sits on is actually a crater lake (from an old volcano). Lake Bratan is also the second biggest lake in Bali. If time and weather admits, we can take some short and scenic hikes around the lake; one of the greatest nature escape in Bali!

We will arrive in Munduk by mid-afternoon, leaving some time to explore the area on your own after checking-in. The evening is free at leisure.

We will make a couple of stops on the way, including a short one at Munduk Waterfalls, a refreshing sight for nature lovers. Right after, we will visit Melanting Temple guarded by two huge dragon statues in the main gate. The temple receives many locals who come here to get holy water and purify their minds.

We will reach your accommodation for the next 3 nights by mid-afternoon. Check-in and rest of the day at leisure to start exploring the area on your own. Aside from the spectacular underwater splendors off its coastline, the serene little village of Pemuteran is surrounded by Balinese distinct cultural charm which radiates from the beautiful temples that lie in some of the most dramatic natural settings in Bali.

Early wake-up this morning! We will leave before breakfast to observe dolphins in the sea at sunrise - quite a magical experience! Don't worry about your stomach as we will make a stop in a local restaurant for a well-deserved breakfast.

We then head towards Banjar Hot Springs, referred to as ‘Air Panas Banjar’ and set in the midst of the jungle in a beautifully landscaped tropical garden. The springs consist of three public and one private pool. The hot springs are filled with milky, white warm water (approximately 38°C) that flow from a natural hot spring and pour out of eight stone-carved naga into the first pool. We will take the opportunity to also visit Brahmavihara Arama Budha Temple, built in the last century.

Our last stop of the day will take us to Kintamani, the most scenic and famous sight in Bali. Mount Batur rises prominently above a vivid landscape of greenery; crystalline Lake Batur rests inside the active caldera. Interesting villages and Bali's highest temple cling to the rim of the active volcano. Kintamani is a postcard-perfect reminder of what made Bali so magical before the hammer of tourism struck.

It has stepped terraces and flights of stairs which ascend to a number of courtyards and brick gateways that in turn lead up to the main spire or Meru structure, All this is aligned along a single axis and designed to lead the spiritual person upward and closer to the mountain which is considered sacred. The main sanctuary of the complex is the Pura Penataran Agung.

First stop at Tirta Gangga, a water palace and a maze of pools and fountains surrounded by a lush garden and stone carvings and statues. The one hectare complex was built in 1946 by the late King of Karangsem but was destroyed almost entirely by the eruption of nearby Mount Agung in 1963. It has been lovingly re-built and restored and has an air of authentic royal magnificence. We then leave the van behind and take a scenic, nature hike from Kastala to Tenganan Village across rice terraces and green & lush hills.
